Crown update

The GOV.UK Crown logo has been updated to reflect the changing of the monarch. King Charles III uses the Tudor Crown, rather than the St Edward’s Crown chosen by Queen Elizabeth II.

If your service uses GOV.UK branding, you must update it to use the new logo. You must make this change by 1 March 2024 and not before 19 February 2024.

The Royal Coat of Arms used in the GOV.UK footer will be updated at a later date.

Only services hosted on domains ending [myservice].service.gov.uk should use GOV.UK branding. Other services, including agent-facing services, should instead use the internal service header and internal service footer.

How to update

You can get the new logo by updating GOV.UK Frontend, editing HTML or using DWP CASA.

Updating GOV.UK Frontend

If you are already using the GOV.UK Header component macro, updating your GOV.UK Frontend package to one of the following versions will allow you to enable the new Crown logo.

The version you should choose depends on which version of GOV.UK Frontend you are currently using.

To update GOV.UK Frontend:

  1. Locate your package.json file.
  2. Update the version number for the govuk-frontend package to the new version you want to install.
  3. Run npm install.

If you have already set a custom header you will need to locate it; if not, you will need a layout that you can re-use.

We have created an example merge request for the component update; this example includes updating GOV.UK Frontend from v4.7.0 to v4.8.0 but you should use the appropriate version numbers for your own project.

Editing HTML

If you are not using the component but instead using HTML directly, now is a good time to switch to the component example. This means future updates should be aligned, reducing the chance of breakages.

The part you need to replace is the <path> in the <svg> element.

Using DWP CASA

If you are using DWP CASA, releases have already been made that include the new Crown logo. Choose the update that matches the major version of CASA you are currently using.

If you are using a custom layout you can get the new logo by updating GOV.UK Frontend.
